Sheffield Stealers were the original Yorkshire Korfballing powerhouse, formed in 1988 and holding National League status both prior to and following
the formation of the Central England Korfball League in 1994. Sheffield University, hugely successful in Student competition during the early nineties,
were the inaugural CEKL champions in 1995 and were joined in the league by Hallam Trotters. Originally developing as the Stealers Rnd team,
Trotters recruited heavily from the Hallamshire Hospital and eventually assumed their own identity. A few name changes along the way, but the Trotters
continue to compete to this day having long outlived their original parent club. Stealers demise was witnessed around 2001 several years after they had withdrawn from National Competition.
Teams had existed at Leeds Polytechnic College from 1988 to 1989, and also at York St. Johns until 1995, but a firm, enduring presence outside South
Yorkshire when the Leeds University and Bradford Clubs were founded between 1996 and 1998, established by ex-Sheffield University and Trotters players respectively. CEKL members Bradford later upped sticks to Leeds whilst continuing to compete in regional competition, whilst Leeds University re-entered
league korfball in the guise of the City 2nd team in 2005 before breaking away to compete in their own right in 2007.
The Hallam University club was founded in 2001 and quickly established itself as a strong competitor in student and league korfball, winning the BUSA Nationals in only its third season. Three Hallam graduates formed Snake Bite KC in 2004, who following several years of steady growth won the first
Yorkshire Korfball League title in 2007 follwoing devolution from the CEKA. Yorkshire teams continue to compete with credit in the Central England
League, SheffieldUniversity distinguishing themselves by becoming the first student team to win back to back titles in 2005/06 and 2006/07, the first
White Rose champions since the Stealers back in 2000.
